To get the best grapes yield, the following factors should be considered –
Soil: The ideal soil for grapes should be fertile with 6.5-8.5 pH, should not be alkaline and have medium water holding capacity.
Climate: In India, grapes are grown in sub-tropical, hot tropical and mild tropical climatic regions.
Season: Usually, planting is done from October to January. In regions where the monsoon is late, planting is also done during June-July.
Spacing: Spacing for planting depends on soil type, variety and method of training. The distance between two rows should be 2 – 3 m while the distance between vines within a row should be half of that, accommodating vines from 2000 to 5000 per hectare.
Nutrients: Grapes need Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Sulphur, Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Copper and Boron. It is recommended to test your soil for deficient nutrients and provide fertilisers accordingly.
Irrigation system: Drip irrigation is highly recommended as it efficiently meets water requirement of the crop.
